A Morning in La Penita, Mexico

6

During my week in Sayulita, Mexico, with Nourish Retreats, we ended up planning a trip to La Penita. La Penita is a small town, about 30 minutes from Sayulita, and famous for its market.

And we did see some strange things in that market…

Like dyed chicks.

And amusingly titled DVDs.

My favorite: The Tooth Fairy (starring The Rock) is titled La Magia Necesita MAS MUSCULO — Hada por Acidente!

To my great surprise, it turns out that La Penita is popular with American and Canadian expats — for both traveling and living. After spending a few hours here, I feel like this is the kind of town where I’d like to settle for awhile.

It’s right on the beach, it’s rough enough around the edges to keep the high-maintenance tourists away, and just from walking around, it seems to be the kind of friendly place where people get to know each other.  Its Southeast Asian equivalent would be Mui Ne, Vietnam.

There are so many different places to spend Puerto Vallarta holidays — you can luxuriate in a beachfront condo in Punta de Mita, do the surfer bum thing in Sayulita, or just find a nice small town like La Penita.

If you’re looking to travel to Puerto Vallarta, but you’d rather trade the high-rise condos for a smaller, quieter city with lots of charm, consider La Penita.  You might be convinced to stay a little longer!

My time in La Penita was part of my week as a guest of Nourish Retreats.  All opinions, as always, are my own.

Oh no!! Those poor chicks! Although, it always seems as though things are always THAT much stranger in China:

    Those DVDs look totally legit…

  3. Hey Kate… This is where I live now! (No more Cancun, thank you.) It’snot so much of a tourist town as it is an authentic Mexican town, but the locals are friendly and kind to tourists. Nice little write-up for a nice small town.

Glad to see that life can slow down in these little towns. I’ve been to small towns similar to this and its great when the people care enough to get to know one another. Even if you’re just visiting.

    Thanks Kate!
