I’m Off to South Africa!

20

As this post goes live, I will be newly arrived in a country that I have wanted to visit for such a long time: SOUTH AFRICA!

I am very happy to be visiting South Africa as one of five travel influencers invited by Visit South Africa.  I got my first email about the trip back in July and I jumped out of my chair, screaming with joy!  This is going to be an incredible two-week trip, taking in the best of the country!

Joining me are two of my frequent partners in crime: Michael Hodson of Go See Write and Cailin O’Neil of Travel Yourself and The Taste of Travel, as well as JD Andrews of EarthXplorer and Mike Richard of Vagabondish.

My big goal is to show you that South Africa is a fun and safe destination for female travelers.

Featured Activities

This trip will take us to Johannesburg, Ngala Private Game Reserve in Kruger National Park, Kimberley, and Cape Town.

Here are some of the activities I am looking forward to the most:

Safari in Ngala Game Reserve.  Kruger National Park is one of the best places in the world to go on safari.  Though it’s rare to see all five of the Big Five in one trip, you never know!

Taking the Blue Train from Pretoria to Cape Town.  The Blue Train is a FANCY TRAIN — as in a gentlemen-must-wear-jackets-for-dinner-or-nobody’s-eating-anything train.  I’ve never taken a fancy train before and I know I’m going to love it!

Getting into Johannesburg.  This city doesn’t have the best reputation, but I look forward to seeing the real Johannesburg of today and exploring its sights, dining and nightlife.

Paragliding over Cape Town.  Cape Town has one of the world’s most beautiful urban settings.  I can’t wait to see it from high in the air!

Exploring townships.  Only in South Africa.  I’ve heard so much about these neighborhoods, have heard many conflicting things, and look forward to experiencing them for myself.

Spending time with rescued penguins.  Did you know that penguins live in Africa?  They do!  I’ve already been thinking of names for my potential penguin.

You can win a trip of your own!

Visit South Africa is giving away a trip for two to South Africa!  Enter here and you could be on a trip that’s almost exactly the same as ours!

During the trip, be sure to follow the #VisitSouthAfrica tag on Twitter and follow my Facebook page for photos and updates.  The itinerary is jam-packed and I’m not sure how much actual blogging I’ll be able to do live from the road, but I’ll definitely be tweeting, Instagramming, and Facebooking like mad.

I can’t wait to share this country with you all.  I hope you enjoy it!

Don’t forget to visit the City Bowl Market on Hope Street while you’re in Cape Town, best market ever. Enjoy!

Kate…looking forward to the SA content. Btw, I tried the “enter” link for the contest and at least on my iPad I got an error message. Just a heads up.

  3. Amanda says:

Fun! We’ve wanted to travel there for quite some time. Trip of a lifetime! We’ll be sure to pop back in a couple weeks to see how it all turned out.

  7. Very cool!! I’ve been wanting to travel there for years, and I work with a girl from there right now who has told me amazing things. I’m looking forward to hearing about it from your perspective…and reeealllly excited to hear about the penguins 🙂

  8. AHHH! South Africa! It’s been on my list for a while as well. How exciting! And that itinerary looks amazing. Can’t wait to read all about it 😀

  9. Sounds amazing! My company just took a tour group to Kruger park a few weeks ago and they absolutely loved it. They also got to see the Big 5! Apparently there was a big fire in the park, which is sad, but it’s good for visitors in a way because it somewhat condensed the animals and gave a better chance of seeing them. Careful of snakes–apparently one of our travelers came across a Black Mamba in the bathroom! Have a great time! 🙂

Wow, sounds fun! Competition: entered 🙂

  11. Amazing! Makes a nice change to the wonderful English weather in London this time of the year innit 🙂

  12. Have an amazing time!! I’m sure the weather will be great too, so that’s a plus. We’re all looking forward to the Africa photos and posts!

I’ve always wondered why you hadn’t been there before but I will be honest the plane ticket there doesn’t come cheap – after all it is at the bottom of the continent. But I can promise once you get there its all worth it. And I am not just saying that because I am from there 🙂
    Blue train! you lucky fish!
Have a wonderful time and I can’t wait to read your posts showing off my country….

Super jealous. South Africa is definitely on my list. My flat mate is South African so I guess I have a different perspective of the country.

    Hello Kate,

what a fantastic prize to win – congrats. As someone that moved here just over 2 years ago I just wanted to welcome you and wish you a fantastic holiday. Your itinerary looks great and am sure you will go home with some amazing photos and memories.

If you feel like writing a short guest post blog (no more than 600 words – happy to include a link back to your website) for our SA Travel Blog we would be honored. Email us at infowhere2stay-southafricacom if you are interested. Photos to go with it would be great too.

Either way we hope you hav ethe experience of a lifetime!

    Neil

    • Thanks, Neil! Believe me, it’s not a prize so much as I’m working for it — but definitely an amazing perk!

I actually rarely guest post so I’m going to decline, but good luck with you site!
