Ideas for February Travel

Porto Moniz

It’s the last day of January.  We’re still in the endless doldrums of winter, though the days are getting longer and there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.

And of course, this is the time of year that I am endlessly dreaming about planning last minute holidays to warm destinations.  I used to wait out the winter as long as I could stand it — then book a warm trip in February.  (Though one year I only made it to November.)

Thankfully, there are plenty of options for late holiday deals from London.  I had fun picking out some destinations.

My criteria: places that are warm (though not necessarily hot), places that are easily accessible from London, and places that are filled with adventure, culture, and lots of interesting things to do.  Places where February is filled with sunshine, and hopefully fewer tourists as well.

Here are my favorite choices for February holiday destinations:

Madeira

This Portuguese island, adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the warmest places in Europe.  It’s not quite tropical weather in February, but you’ll definitely be able to walk around without a coat!

And walking is one of the best things you can do on Madeira.  The coastline is gorgeous and the island is covered with wildflowers, some of which bloom early in the season.  Go on a whale watch, grab some fresh seafood, and enjoy the culture on a beautiful island.

Egypt’s Red Sea Coast

Pyramids, shmyramids.  This holiday is all about soaking up as much sun as possible.  The Red Sea is a wonderful place to visit in February, with plenty of heat.  And the clear turquoise waters are as ready for snorkeling as ever.

Where to go?  Dahab is the backpacker favorite, but Hurghada and Sham El Sheikh are the top choices for all-inclusive resorts.  That being said, I’d probably just head to Dahab to relax and meet people.  And of course, to trek to Mount Sinai for the sunrise.

South Africa

If it’s cold up north, just head south of the equator.  I haven’t stopped talking about South Africa since visiting the country for the first time this fall, and I only want to get back and enjoy more of it!

The destination for me?  Durban and the Wild Coast.  This is the big beach community in South Africa — think of Durban as the Miami and the Wild Coast as a laid-back, beautiful beach community.  There would be nowhere better to soak up the sun this winter.

Where would you like to go this February?
