Travel Blogs: Best of the Week (July 11-17, 2010)
I continue to add RSS feeds to my Travel Blogs Bundle on Google Reader. Feel free to subscribe!
Here are some of my favorite posts of the past week:
Tainted Travel Bloggers: Far and away the post of the week. Long story short, Monica from A Pair of Panties and Boxers learned that certain travel bloggers are posting sponsored content without a disclaimer and claiming it as their own work. And these are prominent travel bloggers. Not smart. Read the comments — we had fascinating discussions about blogging ethics and bad blogger behavior.
Puffin Watching: Island of Staffa, Scotland: Need your daily dose of cuteness? Backpacking Matt has a great pictures of some very goofy little birds on Scotland’s Isle of Staffa off the Isle of Mull. This is one of the few places in Britain where you can see them. Adorable pictures.
5 Things I Learned From Meeting The Happiest People In The World, Vanuatu: This post from Sofia at As We Travel made me smile. People from Vanuatu are so kind, and so open, and so friendly — I’d love to experience a place like that! (Warning: there is one borderline NSFW image of men in tribal dress.)
One Month in Argentina: Keith from Traveling Savage is planning a month in Argentina and is trying to decide between Buenos Aires, Mendoza and the Andes, and Salta. He makes a great argument for each. You know how much I love Buenos Aires, but I think he should head to Salta or Cordoba!
How I Became a Mexofrancophile: Kirsten Alana tells us how she fell in love with France, then acquired an unexpected love for Mexico. As someone who loves Europe and Vegas for totally different reasons, I completely understand! Her beautiful photos capture some of the diverse landscapes.
Motorbiking Southern Laos: Bolaven Plateau: Michael from Art of Backpacking shared a destination way off the beaten path in Southeast Asia. I’ve been interested in southern Laos since it was a featured destination in Lonely Planet’s 2007 Bluelist. Between the photos and the detail-filled descriptions, it feels like you’re there.
The Photo Vulture: 5 Steps to Avoid Becoming a Bird of Prey: This was a guest post on The World Is My Jungle Gym by Crystal from Storytelling From An International Traveler, and I had no idea how much I needed to read it until I read it. Crystal is a documentary photographer and she lays out steps to take to take pictures of people around the world with compassion and kindness.
Photoblog: Still Waters of Lake Ohrid, Macedonia: I have dozens of places I want to travel to in Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Serbia, even Albania. But Macedonia? I just couldn’t get excited for it. After seeing this post by Nellie of Wild Junket, however, I know I have to visit Lake Ohrid, a beautiful place seldom visited by foreigners!
