Travelers’ Night In — Sun and Fun!

This week’s round of Travelers’ Night In, the interactive Twitter discussion for avid travelers and travel lovers, focused on sun and fun!  As always, ten questions were asked, people responded while tagging their tweets #TNI, and learned quite a bit about some new destinations!

Here are the questions for the week:

Q1. What is the best international destination for sun and fun?

VeronaCarter Def. the Caribbean! So many islands to choose from

artistatlarge My favorite is Tulum, QR, Mexico! I like it because it’s laid back.

chic_travel One word: Ibiza.

My pick? Buenos Aires.  International sun and fun, especially since it’s in the southern hemisphere.  While my family was sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner in snowy Massachusetts, I was getting sunburned in Recoleta!

Q2. Do you prefer all-inclusive, or pay as you go resort? Adults only or kids welcome?

tomtravel2 All inclusive ONLY if the food is excellent and drinks top shelf.

EscapeArtistLLC Really depends on the all inclusive because some are not that hot. I prefer kid free vacations

GoSaraBeth pay as you go resort (better food and drinks, service level is better) – i don’t mind when kids are welcome

I’ve never done an all-inclusive resort, but I’m open to the idea — if the food were good.  As for kids, I love them, but I don’t love them when I travel.  ESPECIALLY in my Vegas.

Q3. Favorite destination “slang”? Where did you pick it up & what does it mean?

mswoodenshoes hakuna matata. Everywhere I went in Kenya & Tanzania, no matter the situation it was all “hakuna matata”. No worries. & it was true

TravelMaestro Yrs ago in Jamaica local accused hubs as terrorist cause wife is “da bomb”! Wouldn’t go over well now, but funny then!

nu_veau well if u ever go to the caribbean and hear the word ‘lime’ it means to hang out

In Italy, there are two phrases that will get you everywhere: “Prego” and “Va bene!”  Both have several different subtle meanings, so when in doubt, just keep saying these two phrases.

By the end of my semester in Florence, my classmates and I spoke a strange combination of English with random Italian words sprinkled throughout!

Q4. Favorite city in the summer – what do you love about it?

NewYorkGuest Naturally, my favorite city in the summer is NYC. But second choice is Amsterdam! Love to sit by the canals w/ een bierja

ZipSetRachel Chicago is the best in the summer. All the young people come out to play!

camorose I loved Munich in the summer: riding bikes and laying out at Englischergarten is a great way to spend a sunny afternoon!

I have to say my Boston (pictured below).  The summers here are fantastic — hot, humid (which I love), and the streets are filled with people.  Free concerts on the Esplanade.  Red Sox games.  The Fourth of July.  Dining al fresco on Newbury Street.  Late-night gelato in the North End.

I have a runner-up as well — Rome.  I think Rome is at its best during the summer — fiery, hot, art-filled, and home to gorgeous men wearing clothing that shows off their bodies. 😉

Q5. Show us your favorite beach photo and tell us where it was taken!

gergnesdunk One of my favorite beach photos: Sandy Beach, Oahu, with a rainbow.

llgable Fav beach photo 1 = Vietnam, China Beach

yani_rocks more pic from Reduit beach in St. lucia.

Here is one of my Photos of the Week, taken in Cancun this past August:

Q6. Best vacation/trip souvenir?

faerievert: My fave souvenirs are paintings from local artists- framing @ home costs more than the art

airtreks Still wear the handmade scarf bought in Cusco in 1998. Alpaca wool, w/ alpacas on it.

artistatlarge My favorite souvenirs are my photographs

My friend Lisa and I got professional photos taken with some Chippendales dancers at the Rio in Las Vegas.  I laugh every time I look at them.  Definitely a great splurge!

Also, if you’re in Italy, Florence is THE best place for quality souvenirs.  Buy gold on the Ponte Vecchio (pictured below) and leather at the boutiques (NEVER markets) in the Santa Croce area.

Q7. Best non-beach sun and fun destination?

drdevon Taos, NM in summer – bike, hike, fly fish, whitewater rafting

TravelMinded probably where I will be next week: Death Valley, CA

LimeWave Rome. The gelato, icecream, melts fast though 😉

LAS. VEGAS.  Tons of sun and tons of fun!  And if you want a beach, there’s always Tao Beach.

Q8. Favorite beverage to cool off on a hot day?

ZipSetRachel A El Salvadorian dude mashedied a coconut open for me .. pretty delicious on a VERY hot day

lori_travels “ZAKATE” mix strawberries & cane sugar with mortar & pestle. poor into rocks glass with ice, add VANILLA vodka & lime wedge. ENJOY!

julietrevelyan A fabulous mojito always works too.

Wow, I’m in the minority — when I’m hot, I never drink alcohol!  The combination doesn’t work for me.  I’ll gladly take a lemonade.

Q9. What is your favorite adventurous warm weather activity?

MelaniePahl Backing the Colorado Rockies

1step2theleft Diving in Sudan in search of hammerhead sharks!

Wandering_Off Define adventurous. Leaving the house with a toddler is adventuous in my book! 😛

Um…dancing outside.  Dancing in pools.  Power flirting.

Q10. Best sun and fun accessory you can’t leave home without?

lori_travels Sarongs (plural!)… so versatile. essential! …after shades & spf 😉

airtreks The flippie floppies.

YucatanHolidays Before we leave, my sun & fun must accessory:

My sunglasses!  I just bought this new pair of D&Gs:

And that’s the week!

    Glad that you like! 🙂

  5. What a great round-up! I guess I need to be more clever in my answers next time to be included. 😉

    • Kate says:

Actually, Kara, I just searched for “#TNI Q4,” etc, since that made it easier to find the right answers. Tag the question number next week!

  6. Tom Lewis says:

Thanks for including me in your very fun summary of #TNI. I still think the best souvenir was “a baby.” See you in Vegas!

  7. My first one. And yep, it was really fun. Fast paced and often hilarious. Thanks for including my suggestions, even though one would think my outfit of choice is a scarf with flip flops. That would be weird.

BTW, love the photo of the power flirting. Although it would seem the fancy euro-guy is doing the power part. 🙂
