Travelers’ Night In — Travel Planning!
On this week’s round of Travelers’ Night In, the interactive Twitter discussion for avid travelers and travel lovers, the theme was travel planning! As always, ten questions were asked, people responded while tagging their tweets #TNI, and learned quite a bit about some new destinations!
Here are this week’s questions:
Q1. Must have travel apps for on the go?
AmySchneider13 Four Square makes every trip more fun – and tracks where you’ve been!
suzyqzar Definitely Google Maps, it has saved me more often than not when getting lost & needing the correct public transportation
pamstucky I don’t have a smart phone so I’ll assume you mean appetizers. I’ll go with nachos.
Q2. In a hotel/hostel, who do you approach for local information?
clareappleyard Twitter travel tweeps give best tips! If ur going to a place, Twitter friends will already have been there!
Hejorama The staff at the desk first and then the cool people who hang out in the common room
atlasobscura Beyond the hotel, we also seek out the green haired kid at the local music shop. Almost always good/non-tourist perspective
hopandjaunt Anywhere they sell alcohol there are bound to be honest opinions
Q3. Favorite travel videos/podcasts?
savvytravelblog between writing your own blog, promoting it, working more than full time, who the hell has time to watch podcasts and shows?!
ehalvey Does Anthony Bourdain count? Art and food specials on Discovery, Travel, Food, and History channels.
travelbea *crossing dingers that noone says Rick Steves for #TNI Q3. stage whisper: I’m not a fan*
grahameles Does “Jersey Shore” count?
Q4. How do you score the best travel deals?
TravelPlusWine TravelZoo is the answer to all travel deals. Once found $400 RT to New Zealand from email alert. Great trip!
TravelDesigned Consider travel off season and shoulder seasons
InsiderPerks Also never underestimate the value and service of a travel agent.
WeekendInParis Sometimes I contact the hotel & let them know the price of their rival hotel & ask them to match or beat! They usually do!
Q5. How do you decide where to travel next?
Vagabond3Live I base all of my travel chronologically by movies Hugh Grant has starred in
JohnicaReed I tend to plan around events–art openings, food & wine festivals, etc.
browngirlsfly Recently been leaning towards less popular destinations … off the grid has been more appealing than the well marketed.
global_gourmet I planned a two week trip to Spain in 2008 based solely around a dinner reservation.
Q6. Travel blog with the best tips/inspiration?
ZipSetRachel travel blogs should be like children’s books: short, funny and lots of pictures
cassieroma I enjoy every travel story/blog w true emotion/insight into experience of place/people/culture.
kgoingglobal am i the only one who likes longer travel blogs? i read a lot of blogs that leave me hanging & wanting more info.
pamstucky Not naming names. What I like in a blog: Well thought-out posts w new info. and photos!
Q7. Will tech fully replace the human hotel concierge?
Gadling Fully? No. Largely? Yes. (People love the convenience of tools, but the human touch is divine.)
TravelistaTara No way! But it will enable them to do their jobs better!
museyon If we invent Rosie, Jetsonesque, robots it might!
Liz_Webber No. Can tech get reservations at fully booked restaurants or appease an unhappy kid?
Q8. Activities: Book ahead or last minute?
CravenTravels Usually book “must do” activities in advance, then fill-in at dest for some serendipity
Shantiwallah Yes, this one’s for me! Travel for me is always dependent on money and free time, so always last minute. Flight deal+money=go
theroamantics unless we’re visiting peeps, usually don’t know where we’re sleeping when we land, or what we’re doing. haven’t been stuck yet!
ZoeStarlet I’m more of spur of the moment type of girl! Life is a party, enjoy the chaos, the craziness, & the people!
Q9. How do you decide where to stay when traveling?
whygocanada if there’s free wifi throughout the hotel, they’re halfway to getting my business…
thechrislam location and closeness to public transportation. I hate taxis.
whereisjenny since i have a location independent business the hostel musthave WIFI most important asset of a hostel then comes comfort and price
mymelange Also, being a foodie – there needs to be some good eats close by!
For me, budget plays a huge role here — I’ll often stay at a budget hotel or motel to save money. Another thing to keep in mind is to look for credit card merchant processing for motels.
Q10. Worst mistake to make when planning travel?
starfishtravel Applying for passport too late. Get it now!
GapYearEscape Planning in the first place! You’ll never stick to it anyway. If you do plan, leave room for change. Lots of change!
Nwano Keeping all your personal data in only 1 place. If u lose it=no addresses, phone numbers, contact persons
ChickVacations Another one is buying crappy souvenirs. Yuck. Take video, camera. Those are the memories that mean the most
And that’s the week!
#TNI friends, last week I made a big announcement: I will be spending seven months in Southeast Asia, starting in just a few weeks! Here’s the full announcement.
