Dear future Christmas market traveler,

I know you’ve been thinking about this trip for a long time.

Twinkling lights strung between half-timbered houses. A steaming mug of glühwein warming your hands. The smell of roasted nuts and gingerbread. Beautiful crafts sold from market stalls.

Then you start planning, and the magic fades. Where do I fly into? How do I get around? Which markets are actually worth it? Should I just book an expensive tour instead?!

Now picture this instead:

You know exactly when to go, where to base yourself, which markets deserve your precious days, and how to get between them.

You’ve booked the cheap train fares and a hotel close to the action.

You’re warm, you’re relaxed, and you’re having the trip you’ve been dreaming about.

I’ve been a professional travel blogger since 2010, visiting Europe’s Christmas markets since 2013, and today I live in Prague, one of the Christmas hubs of Europe.

Oh, and I’ve seen travelers make EVERY mistake in the book!

In the Christmas Markets Masterclass, I’ll hand you everything I know in 75 minutes, so you get it right the first time.

See you at the market!

Kate

A lot of travelers make BIG mistakes.

Every December, I cringe as I watch travelers make the same avoidable mistakes:

They plan to travel between Christmas and New Year’s. Hope you weren’t going to Germany, because most German markets close by December 23. Only a handful stay open.

They visit Colmar or Nuremberg on a Saturday. These popular markets get huge crowds on the weekend, and you might wait 20 minutes in line for glühwein.

They only hop from big-city to big-city. Not only are big cities more expensive, but small-town markets are where the real magic happens.

They book a cheap hotel further away to save money. Then the money they saved disappears on Ubers and taxis.

They pack their usual winter clothes, not standing-outside-all-day-in-winter clothes. And they’ll be miserable after an hour of standing on frozen cobblestones.

I recognize that this trip is a big investment.

You are spending your money and using your precious vacation days. I am determined for you to get the most for your money and time.

Thinking about a river cruise?

River cruises have major drawbacks at Christmas.

It’s bad enough that they go to the most visited markets with the biggest crowds.

But in summer 2026, low water on the Rhine and Danube forced cruise lines into ship swaps, long bus transfers, and cancellations.

I don’t think they’re worth the risk. I’ll show you how to see more markets, on your own schedule, by train, bus, and car, and what to ask before you book a cruise if you still want one.

My favorite small town

A tiny town in France that inspired Disney’s Beauty and the Beast — and its full medieval festival that runs just four days a year.

My favorite offbeat spot

A small city in the Czech Republic where the crowds are local, the tourists are rare, and the experience is memorable.

What readers say

“My husband and I went to the German Christmas markets in 2023. We followed Kate’s advice and spent time in Cologne, then took the train to the smaller city of Aachen. It was one of our favourite trips we’ve ever taken!”
