It’s been a while since I did a #Frifotos-themed post, but I think it’s time to jump back into the habit. This week’s theme? CLOUDS! I love clouds and I love photographing them around the world, especially with the Pro HDR app on my iPhone.
This afternoon before my shipwreck in Indonesia, on an island off the coast of Lombok, I got a glimpse of what was headed our way. I’ve never seen cloudy skies and beach like this anywhere in the world.
Yet another reminder to be extremely careful while taking boats during the rainy season in Indonesia.
I spent my time in Iceland enjoying mostly cloudless skies, but the clouds rolled in for my final day. This was shot in Þingvellir National Park, Iceland, just after snorkeling the freezing waters of Silfra under the midnight sun.
The island of Koh Lanta, Thailand, is home to the best sunsets in the world, as you can see. Hitting Koh Lanta at the tail end of rainy season meant that the sunsets were filled with huge indigo clouds as the sun sank into the Andaman.
Then, of course, there’s being up above the clouds! The views were spectacular from the Tirolean Alps, outside Innsbruck, Austria.
One of the many things I love about the TV show Breaking Bad is the cinematography — they feature absolutely GORGEOUS shots of the New Mexico desert. And it’s no exaggeration — as this picture shows, the scenery really is incredible.
This purple sunset over the Blue Mosque in Istanbul was one to remember. It was also my most popular photo ever on Instagram at the time.
Shetland skies brought the drama, like here on the double beach. You’d have to take that shot quickly, though, because in Shetland, the weather changes every few minutes!
As far as I’m concerned, though, the best cloudy skies, filled with big, chunky clouds set against bright blue sky, are in Umbria, Italy!
All really excellent photos and very impressive that you got them with the iphone haha. Favorite has the be from above the Alps since I’ve never made the opportunity to see it myself. At least not yet.
Oh, these are not all from an iPhone, Brian — only the ones of Iceland, Shetland, and Umbria are from my iPhone. I took another version of the Istanbul shot with my iPhone, but this one was from my regular Canon powershot.
Of course I love the purple sunset – what a unique sight! It must have been really special 🙂
That was a great night. 🙂 Jodi and Earl got to see it, too.
I always love how clouds add a dramatic flare to a photo! The Tirolean Alps and Istanbul ones are simply gorgeous!
Great collection! That place in Istanbul looks amazing… on my list now 🙂
Nice collection of cloud photos, Kate! Your Koh Lanta one is my favorite, I think.
wow all these shots are stunning! The sky and clouds are always fun to shoot
i love this. the comforting thing about the sky is that it could look the same anywhere.
Very true, Lauren. 🙂
Istanbul and the Shetlands are my favourites here for sure. The sky in Istanbul – the colours! I love taking shots of clouds, too. They just look so fluffy and wonderful 🙂
Thanks, Tom! That was a crazy night for sure.
My favorite is the purple sunset over the Blue Mosque. I absolutely love clouds, and some of my own favorites (although they never look as good in pictures) are the clouds you see from an airplane as you fly over them… so beautiful!
Yes! I love seeing clouds from an airplane…especially when you land during sunset. Beyond stunning.
I love super cloudy days myself. It makes for the best sleeping weather after a long day of excursions or travel. It’s something about clouds that are so comforting. The picture of Istanbul is award worthy photography!! 🙂

Thanks, Sally!
Clouds can create beautiful scenery as your pictures show. I particularly like when clouds glow during a sunset. It’s truly remarkable beauty from nature.
Cloudy Picture of Thailand and Austria are best. but rest are also very nice.
My two favorites are the one from Koh Lanta and the one from Austria. The alps are on my bucket list.
Those are some stunning nature pictures!!! Incredible!
Clouds are beautiful. Are you aware Kate of Salar De Uyuni a.k.a. the Bolivian Salt Flats? If you havn’t been there, then google images to get an idea! Breathtakingly beautiful. It may not be there for long though as the Bolivian government is planning mining the lakes for Lithium. Should be made a UNESCO site to protect it.
