Seminyak: Kuta’s Sexy Older Sister

It’s no secret that I wasn’t a fan of Kuta, the most popular beach resort town in Bali.

But if you want to escape Kuta, you don’t have to go far — just visit Seminyak.  Seminyak is part of the Kuta area, but it’s so different that it could be a different island.

Instead of stores selling homophobic bumper stickers, you have designer boutiques and art galleries.  The Bali holiday packages often include quieter, nicer hotels.  Instead of beer-soaked bars, you have sexy cocktail lounges.

And the beach, while being as good for surfing as Kuta, is much, much cleaner.

If Kuta is the degenerate little brother who just can’t kick that crystal meth habit, Seminyak is the gorgeous older sister who made straight A’s, captained the lacrosse team AND landed the hottest guy in school.

Kuta is Jesse from Breaking Bad.  Seminyak is Ellen from Damages.  You know, before all the murder and corruption and stuff.

Nightlife establishments in Seminyak don’t feel like they’re in Bali or even Southeast Asia — more like Miami or Las Vegas!

Best of all, Seminyak is close enough to Kuta that you can take part in the same activities.  It’s no big deal to take an ojek (motorbike taxi) to Kuta for shopping or dining, and if you book transportation or adventure tours, they’ll gladly pick you up in Seminyak.

Backpackers and budget travelers tend to avoid Seminyak for their Bali holidays because it’s a bit more expensive than Kuta.  And with Bali already being more expensive than Thailand, Cambodia, Laos or Vietnam, it’s hard to justify adding on the cost.

But there are a few places in Southeast Asia where spending a few more dollars can get you exponentially higher value.  Seminyak is one of those places.

  1. We weren’t fans of Kuta as well. Unfortunately, this was close to Quiksilver Surf School where we also got free lessons, thanks to your tip Kate. They had been so welcoming and it made our experience in Bali absolutely amazing.

  2. This isn’t the first time I’ve hear that Kuta, Bali isn’t all it’s hyped up to be. Glad to know there’s a nice alternative that’s close by.

  3. good posts. But Indonesia is not anly about Bali, we have Manado, Sumatra, Bangka Belitung and any beautiful places. That places is cheaper than Bali and friendly for traveler.

  4. Hi Kate, i just wonder if the criticism about Kuta also applies Kuta Selatan?

I hope you can answer this, best wishes!

  5. Hey,

This is a really great blog, I’m going to Bali alone for 3 weeks tomorrow and was wondering where I should and what I should see. Would like somewhere safe but also so I could meet other travellers and possibly go with them.

Any advice would be awesome. Thanks
    Jane

  6. I have just returned home from a trip to Bali and I completely agree about Kuta! One of the things which we found was best to do was to visit a beach club and escape to an oasis away from the super busy beaches. I’ve just started my blog and would LOVE for you to check it out as I have been reading yours avidly for years I feel that you have inspired me!

  7. Hi Kate,

I am traveling to Bali for work. I am staying in Kuta (Sheraton), but was thinking about hopping to Seminyak for my short stay after. Do you have a resort you would suggest for a single guy? Not looking to hit clubs, but most certainly like a good place to people watch, meet/chat with others, etc. Not looking for hookers or a girly bar, but a place that others like to go and meet others. Also, any bars/pubs/etc in Seminyak that you would suggest (day and night)?

    Thanks

    Derek
